About the Artists
Saul Bitran joined the Conservatory in 2019 and is an associate professor of violin. Bitran has been the first violinist of the award-winning Cuarteto Latinoamericano since 1986. He has received some of Mexico and Chile’s highest artistic awards, including the Bellas Artes Medal and Order of Merit Pablo Neruda. Learn more about Bitran.Jan Halloran joined the Conservatory in 2017 as an assistant professor of clarinet and chamber music. She also leads the Woodwind Seminar. Learn more about Halloran.Amanda Hardy is an assistant professor of oboe. She became principal oboe of the Portland Symphony Orchestra (Maine) in November 2013, where she currently occupies the Clinton Graffam chair. As a recipient of the Gillet Scholarship and Tourjée Alumni Scholarship Award, Hardy studied with Boston Symphony Orchestra principal oboist John Ferrillo at New England Conservatory. Joseph Holt, assistant professor of double bass, is particularly accomplished in and passionate about orchestral playing, and has performed 340 weeks with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, including tours in the United States, Europe, and Asia, as well as performances at Symphony Hall, Carnegie Hall, and Tanglewood. He has played under the baton of virtually every renowned conductor of the last 20 years. Learn more about Holt.Sharan Leventhal joined Boston Conservatory at Berklee in 2005 and teaches applied violin, chamber music, and contemporary performance practice. Learn more about Leventhal. Andrew Mark is a professor of cello and chamber music at the Conservatory. From 1988 to 1991, Mark served as a US Artistic Ambassador, giving recitals and master classes throughout Europe, Asia, Central America, and South America. He was cellist of the Boston Composers String Quartet (1987–1994) and winner of the silver medal at the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Learn more about Mark. Margaret Phillips joined the Conservatory in 2014 and is an associate professor teaching bassoon and contrabassoon. In addition to private lessons, she also teaches reed making, holds a bassoon studio class, and coaches woodwind chamber music ensembles. Learn more about Phillips. Anne Howarth joined the Conservatory in 2021 and is an assistant professor of horn. She also teaches chamber music and the brass section of the Orchestral Repertoire course. Learn more about Howarth.Venezuelan violinist Marielisa Alvarez cofounded and codirects the Boston String Academy, an El Sistema-inspired program which hosts an outstanding children’s string orchestra curriculum serving inner-city children from the Boston area. Dr. Haram Kim, a South Korean pianist, made her New York debut at Carnegie Hall after winning top prizes at piano competitions, and also frequently performed as a collaborative pianist with esteemed members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and other prestigious ensembles. She is currently on the collaborative piano staff at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee.Clara Mazo, violin, is currently completing her master’s degree in contemporary classical music at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. She has enjoyed her time studying with Sharan Leventhal and being able to premiere and record new works, bringing living composers’ works to life. About the Series
