Tyler Kinnear
Career Communities: Composition
Tyler Kinnear, Ph.D.(he/him) is a career advisor, event organizer, and musicologist. As the assistant director of career engagement and programs, Tyler advises students, specializing in the composition community, as well as coordinates Career Center workshops and boot camps. He is passionate about supporting students as they explore, clarify, and realize their career goals. Tyler meets students where they are and strives to help them craft their stories to be both effective and rewarding in an ever-changing career landscape.
With a background in musicology, Tyler specializes in soundscapes and sound studies. His personal interests include music and the environment, histories and theories of listening, and music and nostalgia. He recently completed a research and pedagogy initiative on campus soundscapes and is cocurator of Resounding Change: Sonic Art and the Environment, an award-winning arts exhibition exploring sound in a time of environmental crisis.
Before joining the Career Center in 2023, Tyler served as an internship coordinator at Emerson College and as a humanities instructor at Western Carolina University and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of British Columbia, an M.A. in musicology from the University of Oregon, and a B.M. in Percussion from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
