The Best Kept Secret at Berklee

Community Service Employment (CSE) provides Berklee students with community-based jobs, through which they gain professional experience, educational enrichment, and the opportunity to share their skills and participate in the development of Boston’s multicultural communities.

CSE is one of the most powerful means by which Berklee engages with communities in the Boston area. Utilizing a budget provided by both the college and the federal government’s financial aid program, CSE places student employees at partner organizations and pays them to work as part-time employees. Each CSE position is created not only to provide students with well-paid employment, but also to enhance their education and develop their professional skills and intercultural competency. The college selects partner organizations based on their capacity to provide Berklee students with a meaningful employment experience as well as each organization's ability to positively impact the communities that they are designed to support. Every position, therefore, supports the development of both Berklee students and the neighborhoods of the city that Berklee calls home. Students are often required to commute to off-campus work sites, so the CSE rate of pay is significantly higher than the rate for most on-campus positions.

CSE helps students:

  • pay for education and personal expenses,
  • build a résumé,
  • cultivate a dynamic reference for future employment,
  • make money while making a difference in the community,
  • learn more about their own musical skills,
  • deepen their personal and interpersonal growth, and
  • develop leadership, academic, and professional skills.
