Susan Kinney
Susan Kinney, PT, is a graduate of Northeastern School of Physical Therapy. Her specialty in dance medicine began in 1985 while a member of the medical team that provided specialized care for the Washington Ballet. In addition, she was a team clinician for the Washington Bullets, Washington Capitals, Boston Red Sox, Boston Bruins, and the Boston Celtics. She has provided backstage physical therapy coverage for more than 50 Broadway shows.
In 1994, she established the on-site physical therapy program for Walnut Hill School for the Arts, a position she held for 20 years. She also established the on-site physical therapy clinic at Boston Conservatory in 1997 and additionally set up on-site physical therapy clinics at New England Conservatory, Massachusetts College of Art, the Boston Ballet School, and Berklee.
Kinney is passionate about injury prevention and helping preprofessional dancers, actors, and musicians achieve their peak performance. She has held academic appointments teaching anatomy at Northeastern University's program in physical therapy and the Conservatory's Dance Division. She has been published numerous times in scientific journals on topics regarding dancer health and wellness. Her most recent article, published in The Journal of Dance Medicine and Science, shows the positive effect that the on-site/direct access of physical therapy has regarding specialized diagnoses and the treatment of adolescent and preprofessional dance injuries.
