Gospel Extravaganza 2023
In this Signature Series event, we celebrate the power of gospel music with a performance by Berklee’s Reverence Gospel Choir, directed by Dennis Montgomery III and featuring a special guest performance by Kurt Carr, the legendary producer and arranger of gospel music. Carr is a visiting artist-in-residence with the Africana Studies Division for the 2022-2023 academic year and a four-time Stellar Award-winner recognized for his achievement in the gospel music industry. He is an esteemed composer whose songs have become part of the cannon of today’s gospel music. He has recorded such hits as “In the Sanctuary,” “For Every Mountain,” and many more.
Montgomery, a virtuoso pianist, organist and vocalist, is a professor in Berklee’s Ensemble Department who has led the choir for over two decades, teaching students the history and characteristics of traditional gospel music and how it has transformed over the years into the more contemporary-sounding gospel that is performed today.
For this concert, the Reverence Gospel Choir will be joined by Kurt Carr in a selection of songs celebrating gospel music. The concert is produced by Emmett G. Price III, Tracy Gibbs, and Dennis Montgomery.
