Fresh Prospects: Exit 18 / Retrograde88

Exit 18 is an independent rock outfit from Boston. Formed in 2016 by Julia Perry and Sean Leahy, the group became an engaging live act, releasing their first singles while still attending high school. With Julia’s brother Dylan Perry on drums, alongside Darren Muise and Doug Mears holding down bass and guitar, Exit 18 continues to run riot and evolve together.

With the release of Seventeen in 2019, the group found its voice, setting the tone for its succeeding debut EP. Get Well Soon is a collection of melodically driven songs dealing with themes of disillusionment, modern romance, and the power dynamics of adolescent longing for one’s opinions to be valued. Their second EP, Into the Mirror, was released in November 2021, led by the single “Daddy’s Little Girl.” Their second single, “Plastic Art,” garnered high praise and was placed on two official Spotify playlists. 

Retrograde88 is a psychedelic dream-pop band based in Boston. Formed back in October 2021, the bandmates connected while studying at Berklee. Members include lead vocalist Francesca Londono, bassist Maddie Russell, guitarist Olivia Monarch, drummer Jack Becker, and synth/keys player Gabriel de Solages.

Influenced by the likes of Beach House and Tame Impala, they create a euphoric atmosphere with hazy vocals, funky bass lines, and wavy synths. Being the new kids on the block of the Boston DIY scene, Retrograde88 is set to become your secret new favorite band.
