Kenny Barron with Strings
In this Signature Series concert, NEA Jazz Master and Berklee honorary doctorate recipient Kenny Barron will perform his original music as arranged by Piano Department Professor Eric Gould. Barron’s beautiful piano sound will be amplified by Berklee World Strings, under the direction of String Department Professor Eugene Friesen, giving expression to the joy for which Barron is widely known.
As one of the great melodists in the history of the genre, Kenny Barron has spent decades at the forefront of the jazz piano aristocracy as a performer, composer, arranger, and bandleader. He is an inductee into the National Endowment for the Arts’ prestigious Jazz Masters class of 2010. The Grammy nominee has released more than 40 albums as a leader. As a sideman, he was a member of Dizzy Gillespie’s quintet and appeared with Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Stan Getz, and Joe Henderson, among others.
Barron was a music professor at Rutgers University from 1973 to 2000. He has supported countless young musicians, inviting them to join his band and bringing them into the studio to record on his albums. Seeking challenge and adventure in his musical projects, Barron formed the group Sphere to pay tribute to Thelonious Monk; partnered with violinist Regina Carter as an improvisational duo; and immersed himself in Brazilian music for the album Canta Brasil. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Berklee in 2010.
