Suraya Mohamed

Suraya Mohamed is the producer of programming and partnerships at NPR Music. She serves as the project manager for both Jazz Night In America, a weekly radio series with companion concert and documentary short videos, and Slingshot, public radio’s emerging artist series. A team leader with an inventive approach to content development and production, she also produces the NPR Holiday Specials Package, which includes programs like Tinsel Tales, Hanukkah Lights, Toast of the Nation, Pink Martini's Joy to the World: A Holiday Spectacular and Hamilton: A Story of US. You’ll also find her work on the Tiny Desk Concert series as a contributing producer and the backup sound engineer.

Mohamed started her career as a recording engineer for NPR in the news and cultural programming departments. She was the technical director of Performance Today and project engineer for Radio Expeditions, a collaboration between NPR and the National Geographic Society. In 2000, she left NPR to start her own production company and specialized in documentary production, sound design, mixing, and editing. During that time, she won three Peabody awards, three Gracie Allen awards, and received the NEA Chairman’s Award for Distinguished Service for her work on the Jazz Profiles documentary series.
 
She serves on the board of the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, Maryland, and is an adjunct professor at Howard University’s School of Communications, where she teaches Advanced Audio Production and Audio Engineering Principles. A graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music with degrees in viola performance and recording arts and sciences, she specializes in music journalism and technology. With a wide range of musical interests and experience, she played bass in a high school go-go band, has worked as a substitute violist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and currently plays with an indie rock band in Washington, D.C.
