Berklee’s spring Signature Series will present Grand Gathering: Jazz and Gender Justice at the Berklee Performance Center on Tuesday, April 8, at 8:00 p.m. This production marks the second Grand Gathering by the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice and builds on the success of a 2022 concert that celebrated the publication of its book, New Standards: 101 Lead Sheets by Women Composers.
The performance will showcase the institute’s nine ensembles, covering a range of jazz styles from modern and mainstream to free and electronic, while also featuring improvised dance and original compositions by students. Special guests include four-time Grammy-winning drummer, composer, and producer Terri Lyne Carrington; artist-in-residence Marquis Hill; dancer and choreographer Christiana Hunte; Grammy-winning pianist Kris Davis; turntablist and composer Val Jeanty, and Grammy-winning guitarist Matthew Stevens BM ’09.
The Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice aims to recruit, teach, mentor, and advocate for musicians pursuing jazz with gender and racial justice as guiding principles, while making a significant and lasting cultural shift in jazz and other music communities.
“This second edition of the Grand Gathering is a special moment for the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice,” said Carrington, the institute’s founder and artistic director. “Almost eight years since its founding, and three years since the last Grand Gathering, we are thrilled to come together again for a special concert at the Berklee Performance Center. There are many moving pieces that will come together seamlessly, so I am especially grateful to our students, special guests, and Kris Davis for leading us in making this a night to remember.”
Admission for Grand Gathering: Jazz and Gender Justice is $15/$20 in advance and $20/$25 day of show. For those with a Berklee ID, admission is free/$5 in advance and $5/$10 day of show.
