“How do you connect with your audience through music?”

“What brought your music to the Billboard charts?”

“How do you overcome writer's block?”

The students’ curiosity echoed off of the walls of Berklee’s Cafe 939 during Lauv’s visit on September 20. As an independent artist who has had three songs on the Billboard 100 chart, the rising pop music star has inspired Berklee students with his musicality, work ethic, and morals. The event was moderated by Michele Darling, chair of Electronic Production and Design.

The audience was enraptured when Lauv ran into the venue hall and started performing one of his most well-known songs, “I Like Me Better." The singer-songwriter captivated everyone with his piano playing, and the crowd sang along with every lyric, each person reflecting their own story and interpretation of the song

During the event, Lauv discussed the idea of authenticity and how embracing vulnerability led to his success. He then began to break down his production techniques and revealed how the essence of a chart-topping song requires one to remain true to their music. Lauv revealed that the hook of “I Like Me Better” was born from a voice memo recording the moment the artist felt a spark of inspiration. He immediately recorded his melodic idea, highlighting the significance of how being present in every moment can lead to inspiration from unexpected places. The artist emphasized to “focus on the art and fall in love with the process.”

Lauv deeply values love and focuses on pursuing music passionately. After his first hit song, he was consumed by fame, and the mental and emotional stress that comes along with it. Overcoming the struggle of feeling unlovable, the Lauv advised Berklee students not to “look for validation that you are lovable through music. You are lovable.” Love is a part of human nature and the musician demonstrated the importance of this idea through his performance and how he connected with his audience.

Lauv’s visit left a lasting impression on the students, inspiring them to embrace their unique journeys in music. His vulnerability and mindset made a profound impact on the lives of students. As they continue their studies, his message of self-expression and perseverance will serve as a guiding force for the next generation of artists.
