Conception: The Awakening of Ogbonné
Come on a musical journey to become enthralled with the mind of the visionary, poet, tenor saxophonist, and artist Ogbonné Mary Orji, who will bring to life her debut visual album, Conception, on the Berklee Performance Center stage. Her collective ensemble of 15 fellow visionaries will showcase her original music, paying homage to her family and her ancestors by fusing the poetry, music, and dance worlds into one.
Orji is an eighth-semester student who fell in love with the world of composition and expressing the human experience through music after being introduced in her early years to spiritual/avant-garde jazz through the works of Pharaoh Saunders, Alice Coltrane, and Michael White, to name a few. But she also was heavily influenced by neo-soul, traditional Igbo highlife, and classic soul music; and as a result, Ogbonné Orji’s original music is a blend of different genres, taking the listener through her perspective of life via cascades of notes with her Visionaries Collective. Through her music, she expresses her love for her higher power, spirituality, and the world around her.
Orji is the recipient of a Berklee World Tour Scholarship, the Thrive Scholarship, and the Billy Pierce Award at Berklee, and has been quietly cultivating and building her self and her artistry over the past three years at the college.
