Berklee presents its Black Music Programming/Africana Studies calendar of events for February, a series of concerts commemorating Black History Month and celebrating the college's newly instituted Africana Studies program. The celebration offers a wide variety of music and lectures by faculty, students, and renowned visiting artists that continues throughout the spring. Events that are open to the public are included below with individual ticket prices. All concerts start at 8:15 p.m. in the BPC. For tickets or more information please call the BPC box office at 617-747-2261, or visit the BPC website.
Thursday, February 1: The Sovereign Bank Music Series Presents Black Music Matters, with Sweet Honey in the Rock and Cornel West. Tickets are $25.
The one-of-a-kind pairing of Grammy Award-winning sextet Sweet Honey in the Rock, and distinguished scholar and author Dr. Cornel West, will also feature Berklee gospel ensemble Overjoyed. This dynamic, perhaps historic, concert-talk will mine the rich subject matter of Black music past and present, and weave the discussion with a capella music.
Thursday, February 8: An Evening with Greg Osby. Tickets are $5.
Saxophonist, composer, producer, educator and Berklee alumnus Geg Osby will be giving lectures and clinics for two weeks as the Herb Alpert Visiting Professor. He performs at this concert with Berklee student musicians—the culmination of his visit. Osby, notable for his insightful and innovative approach to composition and performance, has made an indelible mark on contemporary jazz in the past 20 years as a leader and as a guest artist.
Thursday, February 15: Black Women in Music Celebrated. Tickets are $5.
This concert celebrating the vast contributions of black women to all styles of popular music is presented by Berklee's Black Student Union, and directed by Gabrielle Goodman, associate professor of voice.
Thursday, February 22: Afro-Carribean Crosscurrents in Drum and Song. Tickets are $5.
Featured performers in this concert include Berklee's Steel Pan Ensemble, Afro Cuban Ensemble, and the Bob Marley Ensemble, directed by Ron Reid, associate professor of contemporary writing and production; Ricardo Monzon, assistant professor of percussion; and Matt Jenson, assistant professor of piano.
Sunday, February 25: The Great American Songbook: The Music of Stevie Wonder. Tickets are $25.
Under the direction of associate professor Ken Zambello, professor Richard Evans, and associate vice president for special programs Rob Rose, Berklee students will perform classics from Wonder's rich catalog of chart-toppers. Berklee's Great American Songbook concerts are presented annually to pay tribute to songwriters whose work has endured over generations and who continue to inspire people across the globe.
