Gregor Samsa/Olafur Arnalds/Arms and Sleepers

Tuesday, July 8, 8:00 p.m., Cafe 939
Gregor Samsa returns to Boston for the first time in years after an extensive European tour in support of their recent release on Rest. This Brooklyn band, currently touring as a nine-piece, builds up songs with lilting melodies that come to a radiant glow. Ólafur Arnalds make their second-ever trip to the United States for a brief tour before heading to the European festival circuit and dates opening for Sigur Rós. Their previous visit involved dimmed lights, lush instrumentation, and haunting string arrangements. It was in July of 2006 that the members of Arms and Sleepers locked themselves in an old drafty apartment in Cambridge and began composing and recording. Their new material, focusing on electronic sources, creates a warm sound with ambient undercurrents.

Twain/The Great Unknown/The Spinning Leaves

Wednesday, July 9, 8:00 p.m., Cafe 939
Twain brings a wonderfully sweet, soulful, western swing to the stage with his folk and Americana influences. The Great Unknown approaches themes like a traditional American band—nodding to Guthrie, Dylan and The Band—but developing a sound that is modern. The Spinning Leaves is a wavy ship ride on a mystical wind! Hailing from Philadelphia with a unique blend of Americana, folk, and psychedelia, the band delivers lyrical melodies with a Southern twang.

Oakhurst/Annie Lynch and the Beekeepers/The Low Anthem

Friday, July 11, 8:00 p.m., Cafe 939
For years, Oakhurst has been torching up the stage, as well as creating a stir on major festivals, cruise ships and European tours with its unique sound and unbridled stage energy. The band’s adept picking, sweet harmonies, and unpretentious, go-for-it interpretation of a genre that’s often handled too reverently, sparks interest in bluegrass by folks who don’t know Doc Watson from Doc Holliday. The Shills/Honest Thomas/Fly Upright Kite

Saturday, July 12, 8:00 p.m., Cafe 939
Since forming in early 2004, the Shills have cultivated a sound built from musicianship and creative flexibility. They just released their first self-titled album, a diverse and dynamic display of a young band maturing and hitting their stride. As a live act the Shills have built a solid following throughout the Boston and New York areas with their passion and precision on stage. Honest Thomas, an up-and-coming experimental rock group from Allston, formed in late 2005 and released their first EP in the fall of 2006. They have since built quite a reputation not only with their music but with their live performances. Lightbulb-headed babies, mannequin heads on sticks, and life-size bunny rabbits are just the beginning of what you might get at an Honest Thomas show. The Boston-based indie rock quintet Fly Upright Kite blend guitar effects and loops, plotted vocals, and driving rhythms to establish a unique musical landscape. They are currently recording much-anticipated new material for a late 2008/early 2009 release. (Acoustic set.)
